In the fall of 2011 the 32BJ Training Fund moved our headquarters from 101 6th Avenue to 25 West 18th Street. 32BJ SEIU President at the time Mike Fishman declared “Our goal was not only to make it easier for members to navigate services and benefits, but also to encourage participation and leadership in the union.” We accomplished this and more, making our new facility healthier, greener and more convenient.
The Training Fund
The 32BJ headquarters features 22 brand new, state-of-the-art classrooms for our members’ use. All our rooms feature innovative SmartBoards allowing instructors and students to enjoy a more interactive classroom experience. In addition, all of our classrooms are specialized for the training they provide.
Our 6th floor industrial classrooms are custom tailored for different skills. Members taking Plumbing classes will have working urinals, piping, vanity sinks, and even a bath tub at their disposal to sharpen their hands on training. Equally equipped are our Air Conditioning and Refrigeration rooms, Locksmithing, Carpentry, Electricity, and Computer labs.
Our building features all the familiar union benefits you expect, like legal, training, retirement, health and dental in an easy-to-navigate space. Different departments are separated into neighborhoods, all connected via “Broadway”, a winding hallway with fluorescent lights coming from its’ bamboo flooring. Elevators are available to take members up to the customer service area, where you’re welcomed by a team of greeters. While waiting for an appointment, members are welcome to work on one of the many computer stations behind the desk.
Using efficient high performance fluorescent and LED lamps, we cut lighting energy use by 15% above the standard. 67% of all the electric equipment in the building is Energy Star rated, and 50% of our power comes from renewable energy. The air in our offices contains more fresh air than typical offices helping to maintain a healthy breathing environment.
Our facility was also built using low-emitting materials, decreasing the risk of air contaminations to occupants. The cooling and heating systems are also built with efficiency in mind, using high performance equipment, making it easy to respond to individual zones for heating and cooling needs. Finally, our recycling stations (located on each floor) encourage individual participation in the green effort.
The culmination of all our planning has been our certification as a LEED Certified Commercial Interior recognizing the effort we’ve made in our building’s environmental performance. Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally accepted third-party certification program for high performance green buildings. Because 32BJ is conscious of its building’s carbon footprint, having a LEED Certified building is one concrete step 32BJ has taken towards sustainability by promoting health and safety, and practicing green whole building practices. By setting an example not only to its members but to others as well, through meeting and excelling in LEED criteria - Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality - 32BJ continues to make progress in raising the standards and improving working conditions for its members in the building service industry.
